Raj mistri, chunai and plaster – in plain words
Customers in Delhi often call this work raj mistri or chunai ka kaam. A raj mistri (mason) builds brick walls (chunai), does plaster and cement work, and prepares bases for tiles. On a renovation, the mason's work comes first and decides how good the later finishes look – a crooked wall or uneven plaster shows through tiles and paint.
If you only need a mason for a small job, you can book that. If the job grows into tiles, carpentry and painting, the same team can continue.
Points to check before civil work
- Structural safety. Columns, beams and load-bearing walls are not to be cut or removed. Doubtful walls should be checked by a structural engineer.
- Permissions. Society flats usually need RWA permission; extensions and new construction may need approvals from the local body.
- Debris. Agree how malba will be removed and where it can be stored meanwhile.
- Curing. Plaster and brick work need curing with water for several days – rushing this leads to cracks.
